Planning is essential when it comes to Interior Design; we are to consider carefully what makes a room comfortable, flexible and inviting.
There are no rules – only guidelines, preferences, precedents and accepted wisdom – practical matters and aesthetic considerations. A designer has an eye for the basics; Function of the space. Placement - where best to place items of furniture. Balance – furniture is to be mixed in varying weights, heights, texture and tones. Upholstered furniture, especially skirted sofas, can be a grounding influence.
Movement and sight lines are other factors to consider; we want rooms to be easy to enter and navigate – both physically and visually. Proportion and scale – consider the scale of furniture in comparison to the space available. Floor plan - this helps to visualise traffic flow and balance. Remember that there are an infinite number of ways to style a room.
Think Focal Points and a sense of intimacy in larger rooms – grand houses use smaller-scaled furniture in a skilful manner. In those that have them, Fireplaces are always used as focal points - however if a room has no obvious focal point we will create one.
